Built to Feel Like a Conversation You Already Have
The same 15 screens as v2, restyled in the WhatsApp/Telegram idiom — chat wallpaper, bubble tails, read receipts, last-seen status. Toggle between light and dark to compare.
Roster: Ananya, Meera, Kabir, Divya · Prices unchanged from the canvas · Light = WhatsApp-familiar · Dark = Telegram-familiar
Theme

Why this is a product decision, not a skin
India has roughly half a billion WhatsApp users. Adopting that idiom means the interface needs no explanation — bubbles, ticks, last-seen, chat list all carry meaning your users already know. For a product whose entire premise is "this feels like texting someone", borrowing the grammar of the app they already text in is the single cheapest realism upgrade available.
It also unlocks two mechanics we didn't have. Last-seen becomes storytelling — Meera showing "last seen 04:12" tells you she was up all night on shift, without a word of dialogue. And read receipts create presence: seeing her read your message and start typing is a texture no companion app in this market currently reproduces.
The tension is real and worth naming up front. The more this looks like a real contact, the more the AI disclosure has to work. IT Amendment Rules 2026 already require prominent labelling of synthetic images; a UI engineered to feel human raises the bar rather than lowering it. So this theme adds disclosure surfaces — a persistent subtitle in the app bar, a pinned system note at the top of every conversation — rather than hiding them.

"last seen 04:12" is the single best thing the theme buys us. One familiar UI convention tells the whole story of Meera's night shift — no copy required.
Green online dots on avatars are read instantly by any WhatsApp user. Presence becomes a storytelling device.
Still four cards, no filters, no counter. The scarcity is the point.

App bar carries "last seen today at 04:12" exactly where WhatsApp puts it — instantly legible.
AI label moved below the image as a caption line rather than a dark overlay bar. Less intrusive, still prominent, and it reads as metadata the way a forwarded-message tag does.

Pinned system message at the top of every conversation carries the AI disclosure. This is the theme's answer to the realism/disclosure tension — it uses a familiar convention (pinned note) to make disclosure permanent rather than dismissible.
App bar subtitle reads "AI character · at the office" — disclosure and story status in the same line, always visible.
Blue double ticks on outgoing messages; timestamps inside bubbles. Both borrowed wholesale because they're understood without thought.
Typing indicator is new in v3 and adds real presence — she's composing, not generating.

Chat wallpaper with a faint doodle pattern — the strongest single signal that this is a messaging surface rather than a chatbot panel.
On disclosure: the pinned "AI character" note sits at the top of every thread, so it's only visible on screen 05 here — these screens are scrolled down. The always-visible surface is the app-bar subtitle, which reads "AI character · heading home" on every chat screen.
AI label sits in the image caption row alongside the timestamp, so it reads as message metadata rather than a warning sticker. Still permanent and legible.
Segmented control moved into the coloured app bar (Telegram/Material convention) so it doesn't compete with the chat surface.
Monday's bug still unfixed Wednesday — the moat, unchanged.

Still the open question from v1 and v2: dashboard versus diary. The messaging theme arguably makes the case for a diary stronger — progress bars feel less at home next to chat bubbles.

What the theme adds, and what it costs
What the messaging idiom genuinely buys
Zero learning curve in a market with ~500M WhatsApp users. Nothing needs explaining.
Last-seen as storytelling. "last seen 04:12" communicates Meera's night shift instantly. This is the best new mechanic in v3 and it came free with the convention.
Presence. Online dots, typing indicators and read receipts create the sense of someone on the other end — a texture no Indian competitor currently reproduces.
A clean separation of voice. Chat bubbles are hers; centred system notices are ours. Commerce never wears her voice.
1. Realism raises the disclosure bar — it doesn't lower it
The closer this gets to feeling like a real contact, the more weight the AI disclosure has to carry. I've responded by adding disclosure surfaces rather than trimming them: a pinned system message at the top of every conversation, "AI character" permanently in the app bar subtitle, the label on every image, and the reminder on the account screen.
This is a genuine tension and I'd rather over-disclose. Under the IT Amendment Rules 2026 and the direction of Indian regulation on companion apps, a product that engineers human-feeling texture while soft-pedalling disclosure is the one that gets made an example of.
2. Trade dress — stay in the idiom, off the trademark
I've deliberately used a deep teal, not WhatsApp's green, and our own bubble geometry. Conventions like bubble tails, ticks, chat lists and last-seen are industry-standard and safe. A pixel-accurate WhatsApp clone — their exact greens, their icon, their wordmark — is not, and Meta enforces.
Worth a quick IP check before launch, but the current direction is intentionally distinctive enough.
3. Light or dark — pick one to lead
Both are built. Light/WhatsApp is more familiar to the mass Indian market and reads warmer and more everyday. Dark/Telegram reads more premium and private — which may matter for a product people use at 1am and might not want glanced at.
My lean is dark as default with light available: this is an intimate, often-late-night product, and dark signals discretion. But that's a judgement call about brand, not usability, and it's genuinely yours to make. Toggle above to compare.
4. Still open from earlier passes
"Their week" — dashboard or diary? The messaging theme strengthens the case for a diary in her own voice; progress bars sit awkwardly beside chat bubbles.
Story-beat paywall — still needs a legal read against the engagement-design provisions.
Ambient notifications — now more urgent. A WhatsApp-like app that pushes like WhatsApp, from four people, is a genuine pressure problem. Needs its own pass.
Error and empty states, and the lapsed-user return flow.
